Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation., supports the nine month FORTRESS-Na feasibility study. The Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Innovation Feasibility Studies competition funds the project under application 10195346.
FORTRESS-Na stands fro Feasibility Of Resilient, Transferable, Residential Energy Storage Systems – Sodium). The project is exploring the potential for a UK-engineered residential energy storage platform built around sodium-ion battery technology.
Why Residential Energy Storage Matters
As more homes adopt heat pumps, electric vehicle charging and rooftop solar, these technologies are quickly changing how households generate, store and use electricity. Residential battery systems have an important role to play. They can help households make better use of locally generated renewable energy while reducing pressure on the electricity network.
At the moment, overseas manufacturers supply most residential battery systems installed in the UK. FORTRESS-Na is looking at whether that could be different.
What Will The Study Investigate
The study will investigate whether a resilient UK supply chain could design, engineer and manufacture a residential storage platform. The team will develop its performance, safety, thermal management and control systems around the real demands of UK homes.
The work will include sodium-ion cell evaluation, safety and degradation analysis, battery pack architecture, thermal management, monitoring and control systems, commercial feasibility and potential routes towards UK manufacture.
The FORTRESS-Na Team
The project is led by Enabling Process Technologies Ltd, working with P.A.K Engineering Limited and Batri Limited.
P.A.K Engineering brings expertise in battery pack engineering, thermal management, system development and manufacture.
Batri contributes specialist knowledge in sodium-ion battery technology and UK cell manufacture.
The consortium is also supported by Imperial Consultants, a subsidiary of Imperial College London, providing independent expertise in battery safety, electrochemical analysis and techno-economic assessment.

The findings will help determine whether FORTRESS-Na can move forward into prototype development, pilot deployment and future commercial manufacture.
